Have
you ever wondered how much JELL-O it would take to fill your swimming
pool? Your going to be quizzed on this... One 3 ounce package of JELL-O makes 2 cups of JELL-O. ("Add 1 cup boiling water to gelatin...add 1 cup cold water...makes 4 servings, 1/2 cup each.") The Average Swimming Pool holds 25,000 gallons of water. We have to find the ratio of gelatin needed for each unit volume of water for this or any size pool. The (gelatin mass)/(water volume) ratio can be derived from the 3 ounces to 2 cups ratio. This is equivalent to (3 oz / 2 cup) X (1 lb / 16 oz) X (16 cup / 1 gal) = 1.5 lbs / gal. So you need 1.5 pounds of JELL-O for every gallon of water to make gelatin. One cup equals .0625 gallons. Therefore, we need x number of cups, where .0625(x) = 25,000. We
find that x = 400,000 cups. Since 2 cups of JELL-O requires 3 ounces
of JELL-O mix, we find that we need 37,500 pounds, or 18.75 tons
of JELL-O gelatin mix. Now,
what would the cost of filling the average Swimming Pool with cherry
JELL-O be? Assuming that the JELL-O was bought in individual packages
and not in bulk, the price per 6 ounce package is $1.05. This yields:
($1.05 / 6 oz) x (16 oz / 1 lb) x (1.5 lbs / gal) = $4.20 per gallon.
To
calculate the amount of jello to fill your pool just substitute your
pool's gallonage in the above equation. Happy Eating...
